Top Places to Visit in Whangamata
Whangamata Golf Club – If you are a golf lover, then this is the most ideal spot for you when visiting Whangamata. The club has two courses designed to satisfy the needs of experienced golfers (Titoki 18 hole) or that of the learner/casual golfers (Williamson 9 hole). Invitations are also extended to every golfer which includes green fees, tourists or affiliated players. They also own a pro shop where golf equipment like trundlers, golf gears & carts are sold.
Cathedral Cove – Located at Hahei, about 10 minutes drive from the famous Hot Water Beach, the Cathedral Cove is a marine reserve covering over 9 sq km and it’s New Zealand’s sixth marine reserve. Accessing Cathedral Cove by foot commences from the top of Grange Road, and during summer requires a service vehicle which plies from the visitor car park located on Pa Road to the beginning of the Cathedral Cove track. Accessing the reserve by water is common among Kiwis, which is mostly done via Kayaking as you can have the opportunity to explore the beautiful coastlines of the reserve.
Karangahake Gorge – Commonly referred to as the gateway to the Coromandel, the Karangahake Gorge is strategically situated at the base of the Coromandel range. Accessing its cycle trails and great walks requires passing through a winding road inside the gorge. One of the attractions that captivate tourists is the remnants of the mining equipment which had been set up since the 1800s. You can walk or bike through the old tunnels, or take a 45-minute Rail Tunnel loop walk to Waikino.
Topadahil Art Studios – An amazing art studio that overlooks the Opoutere Beach, the Topadahil was founded by Guity Evelyn (a contemporary French/NZ painter). The studio features vigorous fine art in a variation of media, unique and distinctive painting styles which portrays a blend of Coromandel arts which attracts tourists from all parts of the world. The studio is open every day of the week and all year round for business.
Donut Island – For lovers of wildlife sanctuaries, Donut Island is a perfect spot for you. Originally owned by local iwis (Maori tribe), the centre of the Island can be accessed through a narrow entrance with the aid of a Kayak or a paddleboard. Landing on the Island alone is not permitted as every tourist is assigned to a local tour guide who takes them around the Island safely.
Wentworth Valley & Falls Walk – This is one of the most amazing spots that will thrill every Whangamata tourist. The valley features an easy grade walk with few steep climbs close to the falls. The walk is always interesting as there are two bridge crossings over the two different falls. Each of the falls measures about 20 metres and the walking time is approximately 2 hours.
